As we celebrate 10 years trading in Madoc Street it seems appropriate that the Fairtrade Fortnight Theme is Take a Step. When we started in 2002 we took tentative steps adding the small coffee bar and Christian bookshop, not knowing where it would lead, but look where we are today!
We feel God has blessed us along the way as we seek to do His work here in Llandudno. We are grateful to people who have pioneered the fair trade movement before us. Traidcraft and Created (formally Tearcraft) saw the need, firstly in Bangladesh and then other countries across the world. They found a way to encourage our brothers and sisters although we are miles and miles apart. By stocking their goods and selling them to you, our customers, we are able to help our brothers and sisters take that first step out of poverty.
In the last 10 years we have had numerous people helping us, from the practical help of setting up the shop: such as making shelves, painting them, painting murals, stitching curtains: to the manual labour of rejigging the shop every now and then and fetching 2nd hand fitments from other shops in the town that had finished with them. Many have been willing to help us when it has been necessary to move heavy boxes around for various stalls, enabling us to get the word out that step further. They have also made it possible for us to have a presence at the Victorian Extravaganza and the Celtic Fair. We’ve been involved with the town getting Fairtrade status and each year have actively taken part in Fairtrade Fortnight – taking that step out into the community.
We are grateful for the many volunteers who have gone beyond the call of duty in giving of their time and energy. Our technology has moved forward over the years from a simple Till to a Computerised Point of Sale system, from a simple kettle to make drinks to an all singing all dancing Coffee Maker, from only a retail outlet to an on-line presence: see www.beaconbooksandKrafts.co.uk! (and we thank our volunteers for adapting to the subtle steps forward management are taking!).
So we would love you to celebrate with us and look forward to seeing you at the above event.
